Padma Lakshmi Aims To Beat Martha Stewart’s Record As The Oldest Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model
Padma Lakshmi discusses her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue shoot, Martha Stewart, and her show “Taste the Nation.”
Earlier this month, Martha Stewart made history as she became the oldest model in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue wearing a stunning white one-piece. The 81-year-old gained worldwide recognition for the milestone and now, Padma Lakshmi has claimed she’s hopeful she can knock Martha off her perch in three decades.

52-Year-Old Lakshmi also appeared in this year’s swimsuit edition, showing off her curves in beachy looks including a bikini made of shells. But then, she’s wowed by Martha’s milestone and aims to beat the record.
Of her appearance in this year’s swimsuit edition, the Bravo star reportedly thought it was a prank when her publicist called her with the invite. She told Page Six, ‘I was like, ’No, you’re s–tting me. Literally, I was like, ‘That’s not true, it’s so surreal. I thought it would happen one day for me when I was in my 20s and 30s and a model, but it never did. So, I thought that the ship had sailed. So, it’s almost sweeter happening at this age.”
The Top Chef Judge added of the potential to beat Martha’s record, ‘I hope. I mean, listen, if I’m still doing covers like she is at 80 plus. I mean, God, more power to her. And she’s always been someone I’ve admired, so why should this be any different?’ Lakshmi had thought she would be the oldest on the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Issue, and added, ‘I don’t think about age very much, but I thought that this is kind of historic.’

Lakshmi continued, ‘Age is not the determining factor in terms of friendship or in terms of success, but what people do, how people think, how people act, that’s what’s important and not your age.’

It’s been a busy month for the author named one of TIME 100’s Most Influential People in the World. “I feel surreal,” the chef airing the second season of her cooking and travel show, “Taste the Nation,” said. “I’ve been so tired that I haven’t had time to process it. But I’m very thankful that people love the show and I’m really honored about the Time 100 thing, you know, I could have never foreseen that. And Sports Illustrated is fun, you know?”

Just recently, Lakshmi posted a video from her cooking show that showed her getting emotional over a pig’s slaughter. ‘I didn’t cry, but I did feel very shaken up,’ she confessed of the incident. ‘I don’t know. I’ve never done that before. And, you know, I grew up a vegetarian, so it was hard.’
