U.S. Olympian Tori Bowie, 32, Died From Childbirth Complications, Autopsy Says
A report found Olympian Tori Bowie was 8 months pregnant at the time of her death.
The three-time Olympian Tori Bowie died from complications related to childbirth, as an autopsy reportedly confirmed. The passing comes as a shock to the track/field community, and the 32-year-old had been found dead in her home in Winter Garden on May 2nd when Orange County [Fla.] Sheriff deputies conducted a welfare check at a home after receiving reports a woman in her 30s “hadn’t been seen or heard from in several days.”
Olympian Tori Bowie won three medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, including silver in the 100-meter dash and bronze in the 200.

She also ran the anchor leg in the woman’s 4×100 relay, in which Team USA won gold. In 2017, Bowie was a world champion in both the women’s 100 and 4×100 relay. However, a report from the Orange County [Fla.] Medical Examiner Office has now revealed that Bowie had a “well-developed fetus,’ and was estimated to be 8 months pregnant and undergoing labor at the time of her death in May.
Officials claimed possible complications Bowie suffered included respiratory distress and eclampsia, described as when a person develops seizures following a sudden spike in high blood pressure during pregnancy.

Bowie’s passing was particularly announced on May 3rd by her management company and USA Track & Field. “We’ve lost a client, dear friend, daughter and sister,” Icon Management Inc. said in a statement at the time. “Tori was a champion…a beacon of light that shined so bright! We’re truly heartbroken and our prayers are with the family, friends and everyone that loved her.”
As per the medical examiner, Olympian Torie Bowie’s manner of death is ruled natural.

However, the Mayo Clinic on its website explains “Eclampsia can happen without any previously observed signs or symptoms of preeclampsia. Signs and symptoms that may appear before seizures include severe headaches, vision problems, mental confusion, or altered behaviors. But there are often no symptoms or warning signs,” it says, noting that eclampsia can occur before, during, or after delivery.
