McDonald’s Is Shutting Down Hundreds Of Restaurants In Russia
All 62,000 employees will continue receive their salary.
McDonald’s is shutting down all of its 850 restaurants in Russia to respond to the country’s invasion of Ukraine. The announcement had just been made by CEO Chris Kempczinski, who cited the “unspeakable suffering to innocent people” of Ukrainians.
Pressure has also been flooding on social media by users who’ve been using the hashtag #BoycottMcDonalds.

Many other major brands have also been affected as they continue their operations in the country while Putin’s aggression continues in Ukraine.
The CEO has shared the same announcement in an email that every employee and executive in McDonald’s receives. Kempczinski wrote, “The conflict in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Europe has caused unspeakable suffering to innocent people. As a System, we join the world in condemning aggression and violence and praying for peace.”
“Our number one priority from the start of this crisis has been – and will remain – our people.”

Kempczinski says that every Ukrainian employee continues to receive their full salary while the invasion is ongoing. The same thing applies to the 62,000 workers in Russia as well while they shut down operations in the country temporarily. They have also donated $5 million to their Employee Assistance Fund.
The major decision was made after days of speaking with executive members particularly involved in the operations in Russia.
The CEO concluded that “our values mean we cannot ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine” and quoted Fred Turner’s iconic words in the company, “Do the right thing.”
“That philosophy is enshrined as one of our five guiding values, and there are countless examples over the years of McDonald’s Corporation living up to Fred’s simple ideal. Today, is also one of those days.”
“We understand the impact this will have on our Russian colleagues and partners, which is why we are prepared to support all three legs of the stool in Ukraine and Russia. This includes salary continuation for all McDonald’s employees in Russia,” Kempczinski continued.
It is also “impossible” to predict when the companies can return to normal operations, and McDonald’s will continue to observe the situation.
