Man Got Fired But Keep Showing Up To Work And Got Paid For 4 More Years

A lot of aspects don’t quite add up.

A Subway Maintenance Worker, Ronald Berry, claimed he didn’t know he had been fired for four years. In his defense, he has never had any issue collecting his bi-weekly paycheck over four years and was still receiving letters from the same job he was supposed to have lost.

Berry of New York added he had possibly been placed on sick leave since 2015 for high pressure and asthma. His total earnings from 2015 to date are said to have reached $250,000 before the metropolitan transportation authority’s suspicions aroused. Berry has since been arrested for trespassing when trying to collect his pay last Thursday.

“I never got a call that I was terminated. I’ve been collecting checks for four f***king years.” Berry told the New York Post as he expressed his shock at being arrested while in disbelief at how long it took the MTA to notice. He added: “It’s a fault on the MTA side […]. If I’m terminated, why am I getting letters from them?”

“The last one I got at the end of last month, and I believe it was for asbestos training or track training.” The now ex-subway cleaner also revealed that when he tried to explain to his boss what had been happening, his boss had responded, saying: “That’s not my problem, that’s payroll’s problem.”

Berry worked as a subway maintenance worker, and his total earnings are said to have reached $250,000.

Berry also attested that he would have filed for unemployment if he had been aware of his termination. He was quoted as saying: “Now if they would’ve sent me a termination letter, f**k going to pick a cheque up. I’m terminated already; let me file for unemployment.” Apart from his arrest for trespassing, it remains unclear what will happen to Berry moving forward.

In an interview, Berry insisted that the fault resided solely with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

However, Tim Minton, a spokesperson for the MTA, said they would be investigating the incident, and according to a released statement, it will follow facts, and anyone who inappropriately took public money will be held accountable to the full extent of the law. So far, since the story went viral, many people got confused about how this could be allowed to happen. While many leaped to Berry’s defense, some found the incident quite amusing.

A spokesperson for the MTA has revealed they would investigate. Well, what will happen to Berry moving forward remains unknown.

For others, the idea of not having to work and just picking up paycheques now and then for nothing was a dream come true. Regardless of what happens going forward, this tale is downright a baffling ride. On the other hand, the introduction of bio-metric finger scanners for clocking in and out is thought to be what tipped off the payroll. But then, it’s uncertain how payroll allowed this to happen for so long.
