A standard job while living in a floating apartment complex.

A man from San Diego, California, shares that he’s moving into a flat on a cruise ship soon as the cost there is much lower than his apartment. Austin Wells shared his thoughts with CNBC in an interview as a future resident of the MV Narrative cruise ship, which is set to sail in a few years.

He’s paid $300,000 for a studio apartment with a 12-year lease. It’s 237 sq feet with a foldaway bed, pantry area, desk, and a separate shower room.

MV Narrative was made with affordability in mind compared to most residential boats, although they’re still considerably pricey. But Wells would spend only $2,000 a month, compared to the average $2,500 in San Diego.

The cruise ship will also have 500 private rooms and apartments with facilities, from a private gym, and farmer’s market, to 24-hour room services and medical services. Families don’t have to worry – this ship also houses over 20 restaurants and bars, a school, a library, and even a cinema.

Wells continued, “The thing that most excites me is I don’t have to upend my daily routine, in order to go see the world. My working hours will be shifted towards evenings, nights and very early mornings, but that does open up the ability for me to see a city midday to afternoon.”

“This is probably the first time ever that there is even the ability to have a standard job and even consider working and living from a floating apartment complex.”

And he’s excited about meeting new people as they travel around the world with them. Approximately 1,000 residents will check in for life on MV Narrative. Wells told CNBC, “The goal is to actually have a community of residents on this ship. And so you will establish new friends, you will largely travel the world with them, which is potentially a way to create some of the deepest friendships you’ve ever had.”

The ship is currently being constructed in Croatia and won’t set sail until 2025.
