Lobster Diver Swallowed Whole By Hungry Whale And Then Spat Out

Being eaten by a whale is extremely rare.

Michael Packard, a licensed lobster diver, drove for lobster off the coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts. Unexpectedly, a giant humpback whale swallowed Michael for about 30-40 seconds but then spat him out. Michael, 56, who believed a giant shark had attacked him, suffered some bruises and a dislocated knee but has been released from the hospital.

“I realized, oh my God, I’m in whale’s mouth, and he’s trying to swallow me. And I thought to myself, OK; this is it, I’m finally, I’m gonna die.” Michael told WBZ-TV. Attesting to feeling a huge bump and going completely dark, Michael shared he struggled inside the beast’s mouth, having thought about his wife and his 12 and 15-year-old sons. 

The licensed diver struggled inside the beast’s mouth while thinking about his wife and sons.

It was at this point, Michael claimed he saw the light, and the whale started shaking his head side-to-side. “I got thrown in the air and landed in the water. I was free, and I just floated there. I couldn’t believe it. I’m here to tell it.” The diver recounted to the CBS affiliate. It turned out Michael was rescued by his crewmate Josiah Mayo who was aboard their boat ‘The J ‘n’ J. 

Eventually, the Humpback spat Michael out and was rescued by his crewmate Josiah Mayo.

According to Cape Cod Times, Mayo watched in shock as the water beside the boat erupted while the whale emerged and Michael flew out of the mammal’s mouth. Eventually, he pulled Michael out of the water and used his radio to call authorities on the shore. The Provincetown Fire Department has since confirmed that a call came in about a diver who had suffered severe injuries to his legs.

Michael has thanked the Provincetown rescue squad for its support and assistance.

However, Michael has thanked the Provincetown rescue squad for its support and assistance. On the other hand, Experts have also reacted, claiming it’s rare to be swallowed by a humpback whale. A senior scientist at the New England Aquarium, Peter Corkerson, estimated there’s one in a trillion chance a whale would eat someone. Similarly, it’s said that whales are calm around humans and tend to show little aggression. 

Michael is alive and healthy. However, experts claim it’s rare to be swallowed by a humpback whale.
