Katherine Ryan Says Will Smith Should Have Stayed Home If He Couldn’t Take A Joke
Violence is never the answer.
Katherine Ryan has also weighed in on Will Smith’s Chris Rock slap at the Oscars. Taking to her Instagram stories, the comedian launched a conversation about the incident with her audience and shared some of their discussions. One fan had written to Ryan: “I don’t condone what he [Smith] did as violence is never the answer.”
They added: “But just because Chris is a comedian, it means Will has to sit and watch his wife be insulted? Chris shouldn’t have said it; Will shouldn’t have hit him.”
In response, Ryan said: “Yes, he has to sit and watch his wife be insulted, yes, that’s the point of the celeb monologue. Can’t take a joke; stay home.”
Another user wrote: “I felt the same initially about Smith (get back in your box, dude), but the focus on the slap itself and not the humiliation of a Black woman with a condition on a world stage surely isn’t being given enough focus? The user drew attention to the politicization and policing of Black hair has been rife for centuries and is so complex and nuanced. They insisted Chris’ comment was well below the belt and incredibly harmful.
Similarly, Ryan responded to the user’s remarks in defense of Chris, saying, “Yes, I know, and maybe you don’t know that CHRIS ROCK MADE AN ENTIRE DOCUMENTARY CALLED GOOD HAIR.”
Chris’ 2009 documentary had been centered on the importance of hair in Black culture with the comedian interviewing celebrities, including Raven Symone. However, last Sunday, Smith slapped Chris at the Academy Awards after making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved hair.
Chris’ joke compared Jada to G.I. Jane, a character played by Demi Moore, who notably had a shaved head.
However, The Independent has since reported that a source close to Chris said the 57-Year-Old had no idea about Pinkett’s alopecia diagnosis. On the other hand, a few days before the Oscars, Pinkett had noted in a TikTok that she was proud of her hair and added: “I feel the freedom today. I don’t give two craps what people think of this bald head of mine.”
