While the film Jeanne du Barry has been celebrated as Depp’s comeback, it however has sparked debate. Critics have held divergent views on Depp’s performance and the film itself. Some lauded his command of the French language, while others admired his nuanced portrayal. The period piece was shot during the summer and along with Depp’s career comeback, it also marks his first film in French.

The film takes audiences on a journey alongside Jeanne Vaubernier, an ambitious young woman from a working-class background, as she embarks on a quest for cultural fulfillment and pleasure. Her intelligence and allure propel her up the social ladder, ultimately capturing the heart of King Louis XV and reigniting his joie de vivre. The synopsis read, ‘They fall madly in love. Against all property and etiquette, Jeanne moves to Versailles, where her arrival scandalizes the court.’

The period piece cast includes Benjamin Lavernhe, Melvil Poupaud, Pierre Richard, Pascal Greggory, and India Hair. Promotional images unveiled in late 2022 and January 2023 showcased Depp’s striking transformation, with silver hair, while sporting an iconic tricorn hat, and royal attire befitting the role of King Louis. The budget for the film remains undisclosed, but reports say Depp commands a starting fee of $20 million for his roles. Depp’s involvement with Jeanne du Barry is his first film after a three-year hiatus.
