John Mayer Cryptically Asks Fans “Please Be Kind” As Taylor Swift Releases ‘Speak Now’
Though he didn’t reference his Ex, John Mayer appeared to have a message for Swifties.
Taylor Swift’s ‘Speak Now’ clearly has a message for the Swifties. And John Mayer seems quite concerned about it, needless to say, Taylor’s version is finally breathing and Mayor is already a topic of conversation. Taking to his Instagram, he took a moment to reflect on three nights of Dead & Company shows – his band with numerous surviving Grateful Dead at Folsom Field in Boulder.
At the end of John Mayer’s carousel of images, a shot of drones spelled out the words ‘please be kind’ above the stage.

While the Gravity singer didn’t indicate the image was intended as a message, Swift’s fans appeared to think it was related, with one writing in the comments, ‘The last slide is very speak now coded.’ Another said, ‘It’s TIME JOHN #speaknowtaylorversion.’ The comments went on as another stated, ‘I know this isn’t supposed to be funny but posting this tonight is the funniest thing John Mayer has ever done.’
As for why fans seem convinced John was sending a subtle message, it’s worth noting that he and Taylor dated from 2009 to 2010, aged 32 and 19 respectively.

“Dear John” has originally been released in 2010 and it has long been rumored to be about the now 45-Year-Old. The lyrics of the song include “Dear John, I see it all now, it was wrong / Don’t you think nineteen’s too young / To be played by your dark, twisted games when I loved you so?” And as a result, most of Taylor’s fans have been directing anger and sometimes threatening messages toward Mayer.
Back in 2021, John Mayer posted a screenshot of a DM a fan sent him on Instagram, which implied they hoped he was dead.
“I’ve been getting so many messages like these the past couple days,” he replied to the message, per the screenshots. “I’m not upset, I just tend to have a curious mind and feel compelled to ask. Do you really hope that I die?” The fan eventually apologized and expressed they never thought the artist would even see the message but John bravely responded, “There was some healing today! It’s 100 percent okay. Go forth and live happy and healthy!”

However, Taylor herself has had a message for fans ahead of the album’s re-release.
During her performance at the Minneapolis stop of her Eras Tour, Taylor sang the breakup song for the first time in more than a decade. And as she concluded, she expressed appreciation for the friendships fans are forming amid her tour and said, “I was hoping to ask you that as we lead up to this album, I would love for that kindness and that gentleness to extend onto our internet activities, right?

While Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is the third of six albums she’s recording after the sale of the album masters, the Grammy winner insisted that revisiting the old albums doesn’t include reopening old wounds.
She concluded, “I’m 33 years old. I don’t care about anything that happened to me when I was 19 excepts for songs I wrong and the memories that we made together. What I’m trying to tell you is that I am not putting this album out so that you can go and should feel the need to defend me on the internet against someone you think I might have written a song about 14 million years ago. I do not care. We have all grown up. We’re good.”
