The moment Meta fans have been waiting for is finally here, with Mark Zuckerberg launching Threads today. It has been described as an alternative to Twitter, which has been flooded with problems under Elon Musk’s guidance. The launch of Instagram Threads is said to have been expedited so as to capitalize on the chaos at Twitter headquarters. Fans, including celebrities like Lando Norris and Shakira, have already jumped on it early access but then, what is the so-called Twitter-alternative app all about? Here’ve compiled everything you need to know about Threads.

What Is Instagram Threads?

It’s a text-based conversation app that will be linked to Instagram, allowing users to follow accounts they are already interested in on the photo-sharing platform. With a similar look to Twitter, threads like posts can also be made on the app, enabling people to share viewpoints and connect over conversations. It will be readily available to anyone aged 12 and over in 31 different languages including English, Russian, Spanish, and Traditional Chinese.

The App Store’s description reads: ‘Threads is where communities come together to discuss everything from the topics you care about today to what’ll be trending tomorrow. Whatever it is you’re interested in, you can follow and connect directly with your favorite creators and others who love the same things or build a loyal following of your own to share your ideas, opinions and creativity with the world.’

The app will collect 14 different types of data that might be linked to your identity. Along with your location and browser history, personal data includes financial information, purchase history, and even health data. The App Store opines that identifiers and sensitive information are collected too, in addition to personal contact data. But then, data can vary depending on your use of the features on offer. Notably, creators will keep track of content posted, how you use the app, and its diagnostics as well. But also, threads’ use of this can vary depending on your age and use of the features on offer.

How Much Does Threads Cost?

The new app is completely free to download. However, it’s unknown if there will be any additional costs in using it. On the other hand, Meta had two months ago launched a paid-for-verification service on Instagram and Facebook costing $11.99 per month on the web and $14.99 per month on iOS. Reportedly, it’s possible that Threads could also incorporate similar features, but this is currently yet to be revealed.

When And Where To Download Threads?

You can download Threads on both Play Store and App Store for users aged 12 and above. However, it’s important to note that Threads isn’t currently available to Android users in the United Kingdom or the United States. Threads for Android – Play Store and Threads for iOS – App Store.
