Gypsy Bride Slammed For Wearing Native American-inspired Wedding Dress
The show will officially premiere on July 17th.
Hunter’s wedding dress has sparked a heated debate online as viewers have branded it a Halloween Costume. The Romanichal Gypsy bride appeared on TLC’s My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding, revealing she wanted to do something to appreciate her partner, Dalton of native American descent.
The 19-Year-Old planned to wear a Cherokee-themed wedding dress and sought the help of the famous Gypsy dressmaker Sondra Celli.
As they discussed the ensemble, Sondra admitted she was nervous because it’s not a typical Gypsy dress. But she eventually pulled it through and made Hunter a white sleek dress bejeweled with turquoise tones and colored crystals. The bride equally got a Native-American-influenced headdress that was designed with white feathers.
“It is beautiful; it has the bling. I love it! This is the coolest dress I’ve ever seen,” Hunter exclaimed when she saw the dress for the first time.
While she was delighted about the outcome, the reaction wasn’t the same for Mum Tina. Just as she saw her daughter try on the dress, she couldn’t hold back her tears, and as she uttered: “My daughter is not a Gypsy princess in that dress, she is a bling-out Cherokee goddess!” Hunter arrived at the wedding venue on horseback, and when she showed up, her groom Dalton was seen smiling from ear to ear.
“I see her in that dress, I thought I was gonna fall off my dress,” Dalton said of the moment he saw Hunter.
When asked whether or not she fears she and the show will be accused of cultural appropriation over the bridal outfit, Sondra shared: “I don’t find a problem with putting something inspired from the beauty of Native American clothes on someone who is not Native American. They should be honored that we think their clothing is so beautiful, that we took some of the colors from it.”
In addition to the wedding outfits, the couple equally posed for some casual photos in which she rocked a headband made of flowers and face paint.
However, not everyone seems pleased with the wedding dress as one person commented: “As a native woman, I can honestly say I don’t care for this dress. Head dresses are only worn by men also if you want to honor native culture, look up how a real wedding dress looks like.” Another slammed: “This dress maybe pretty but the Native American culture is not a fashion trend.”
