Festivalgoers Outraged At Being Charged £8 For Sorry-Looking Portion Of Fries

Festivalgoers are geared up for a hot weekend of music, food, and drinks at Worthy Park in Somerset. But then, revelers are now left a bit disappointed with exorbitant prices after being charged £8 for a little, sorry-looking portion of chips at Glastonbury. This chip controversy follows complaints over London pub beer prices.

Festivalgoers are left outraged as food stalls charge £15 for a chicken burger and fries or £18 for a double.

As per Glastonbury’s website, food and drink costs at the festival are currently equivalent to London prices. Photos obtained by MailOnline show a little pile of fries in a small cardboard box, served with a wooden fork. The expensive snacks and drinks are quite a frustration for ticket holders, most of whom have coughed out over £300 on ticket purchases.

A steak salad is sold for £15, as are different pizzas. And for those looking for a cheaper snack, there’s a doughnut stand that’s selling six for just £5.

The Twitter account for Glastonbury @TheGlastoThingy shared their prices ahead of the five-day festival, sparking outrage at the £6.00 starting price for a pint.

When told the price of a portion of the chips, a middle-aged festival-goer said: ‘Oh dear me.’ He added: ‘You’ve really got to enjoy them at that price.’ A security guard working at the festival described the price of a portion of the ‘rosemary salted’ fries as ‘daylight robbery’. Another festivalgoer laughed when told the price and added: ‘They better be f***ing amazing for that.’

The food stall is located£12, within an area only available to people who have paid for the hospitality camping. Tickets at this location cost £675 plus VAT instead of the average £335 plus a £5 booking fee. Of the outrage, spirit lovers were also left shocked as a double and a mixer cost at least £12, the most expensive combination being a spirit and Red Bull. A can of energy drink alone costs £4.50, as opposed to the retail price of £1.50.

The cheapest wine option appears to cost £29, and a half pint of soft drink begins selling at £3.

Twitter users have responded in outrage, with one writing, ‘SIX POUNDS, EIGHTY PENCE.’ Another commented, ‘Just shy of 7 quid for a San Miguel!’ A third said, ‘Robbing b*******… can’t wait.’ One user commented with an angry emoji: ‘Half a pint of Coke is £3. A fifth user said, ‘Glad I packed plenty of rum. Maybe backed up by the odd cheeky pint from the cider bus.’ content. Some festivalgoers appeared contented as one said, ‘£6 for a cider, not too shabby, while another agreed, ‘Actually, not that bad’.

Another, who is comfortable with the prices, said: ‘Considering it was £8+ at the cricket at the weekend, I don’t fall out with this.’ But spirit drinkers appear unpleased; one wrote: ‘F*** me those spirit prices.’ Reportedly, the drinks are about the same as the cost of a pint in London. When it was first set up in the late summer of 1970, admission was just £1, which included free camping and free milk, but now it is one of the most expensive festivals in the UK.

The rising prices of the festival have left many upset in recent years, and in 2022, Co-organizer Emily Eavis responded to the outrage.

She wrote: ‘We have tried very hard to minimize the increase in price on the tickets but we’re facing enormous rises in the costs of running this vast show.’ The organizer attributed the pandemic to placing a financial toll on the festival and thanked fans for their continued support.’ She added: ‘We are, as always, hugely appreciative of your ongoing support.’ However, thousands of festivalgoers have already descended on the site, with stages across the 900-acre site hosting world-class music stars.

Festival-goers that arrived in Somerset on Thursday might have experienced travel disruption due to wet weather, but the skies are due to clear in the area before the music kicks off today.

On the other hand, temperatures are set to remain warm at 22 °C, and highs of 26 °C are expected on Sunday for Sir Elton John’s headline performance. Festival goers already in place claimed they had already experienced a “whole week” of weather on the first day after the morning downpour was replaced with hot sunshine that rapidly interchanged with torrential showers throughout the day. Sheffield rockers Arctic Monkeys are due to top the bill on Friday night on the Pyramid Stage.

The participation of the Arctic Monkeys’ frontman Alex Turner in their slot is uncertain due to his ongoing battle with acute laryngitis. Taking the stage on Saturday night will be the US rockers Guns N’ Roses, featuring the iconic reunion of Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan since 2015. Lizzo, who shares joint headline billing on the lineup poster, will perform just before them. Sir Elton John’s headline performance on Sunday night is highly anticipated, as it signifies the culmination of his farewell tour dates in the UK.
