People Left Baffled Over Daniel Craig As He Stayed Seated When Kate Approached At Wimbledon
Some are horrified over what Daniel Craig did but others say the age of deference is long gone.
The internet has weighed in on the subject of etiquette. It emerges as Richard Eden aired his opinion on Daniel Craig being seated as Kate Middleton approached the Royal Box at the Wimbledon event over the weekend. The Daily Mail Diary Editor insisted the James Actor and wife Rachel Weisz should have gotten to their feet as a mark of respect if not plain good manners.
Richard took to his Instagram to air his opinion as well as shared a photo which the Princess of Wales could be seen taking to Daniel Craig and his wife.
‘This photograph makes me uneasy. While there may not have been space for Rachel Weisz to curtsy or Daniel Craig to bow, shouldn’t they have at least stood up to greet the Princess of Wales? ‘Craig could have even gone mad and removed his sunglasses.’ Notably, actor James Norton, star of Happy Valley and War and Peace, felt able to stand up to greet the princess.
Richard continued in Mail’s new Royals section, stating ‘Even if you’re Hollywood royalty, it would be basic courtesy to stand up when someone comes over to talk to you, whoever they are. When that person is our future queen, it’s even more important.’ I understand that these days, people tend to bow and curtsy only for the monarch. I think that’s a shame.’
The Editor concluded, ‘In my opinion, they should extend the same courtesy to our future queen. It’s certainly not a mistake that James Bond would have made when he was on His Majesty’s Secret Service.’
In the comments under Richard’s Instagram post, his views have since prompted somewhat of a dispute, with one writing, ‘Behave Richard. There are also pictures of Prince William and Prince George chatting with Daniel, who remained seated. I really don’t think they were too fussed.’ ‘Please get over yourself. Not everyone worships your royals,’ said another. Others speculated that the Princess had asked the couple to remain seated.
While only a few weighed in on Daniel Craig’s side, plenty took Richard’s side. ‘I was thing the same when I saw her shake their hands,’ agreed a fan of traditional courtesy. ‘Stand up man!’ As per another commenter: ‘They didn’t stand up to greet the King of Spain….James Bond needs to learn some basic etiquette rules.’ Yet another put it succinctly: ‘Total lack of manners and/or awareness.’ In your opinion, how should non-royals behave when they meet the royals?
