The singer-songwriter Coco Lee has died aged 48 after attempting to take her own life.

The Hong-Kong born had been battling depression for several years, older sisters Carol and Nancy Lee said in a statement on Facebook and Instagram. Coco Lee’s condition is said to have worsened drastically over the last months and as a result, she attempted to take her own life at her home on July 2nd, and attempts to treat her in a hospital failed.

‘Although Coco sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her,’ the statement said. Coco, who was initially a Mandopop singer, had recently recovered from a leg injury. Back in February, she had shared she was going for an operation after triggering an old injury in October during a dance practice. Notably, the singer had been born with a defect in her left leg, meaning she was forced to rely on her right leg for the majority of her movement. Coco had a successful career in Asia as a pop singer in the 1990s and 2000s.

She was known for her powerful voice and live performances. Coco’s 1996 album became the best-selling record in Asia and while she was initially a Mandopop singer, the singer branched out to release albums in Cantonese and English over her nearly 30-year career. Her single Do You Want My Love also entered the US music charts after seeing success in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Her first album in English was called Just No Other Way (1999). She was the voice of Fa Mulan in the Mandarin version of Disney’s Mulan and also sang the Mandarin version of the film’s theme song Reflection.

Coco performed her song A Love Before Time from the film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon at the Oscars in 2001. It was nominated for Best Original Song. And her latest single, Tragic, had been released just months ago on February 14. However, Coco tied the knot with Bruce Rockowitz in 2011, a Canadian businessman who is the former chief executive of Hong Kong supply chain company Li & Fung. While she had two stepdaughters from her marriage with Rockowitz, Lee did not have children of her own.
