Brazil Bans Sales Of iPhones For Not Putting Chargers In The Box

They demand the charger back in the box.

Everyone and their mom were surprised when smartphones decided not to sell their phones with chargers anymore. With the reason to keep one’s environment clean and sustainable, one household wouldn’t need multiple of the same chargers, right?

Brazil isn’t taking any of that – the Ministry of Justice has banned sales until Apple puts them back in the boxes. The reason being not having the charger equates to selling an “incomplete product.”

Apple is also fined for sales of their phones since iPhone 12 was released, and currently, Apple is preparing for the launch of the iPhone 14. Apple’s spokesperson has also spoken that

MJSP explains in a statement, “The sale of iPhone cell phones unaccompanied by battery chargers has been suspended throughout the national territory. The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) also imposed a fine on the manufacturer Apple Computer Brasil in the amount of R $12,275,500 (£2m/$2.3m) and ordered the cancellation of the registration with Anatel of the brand’s smartphones from the iPhone12 model.”

“The chargers are tying, selling an incomplete product or lacking essential functionality, refusing to sell a complete product through discrimination against the consumer and transferring responsibility to third parties.”

This happened after the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) started the case in December. Senacon sued Apple for its new sales practice. Apple may be marked as a “repeat offender” should they continue this practice, and more severe punishments will befall them.

Apple spoke with Reuters, “We have already won several court rulings in Brazil on this matter, and we are confident that our customers are aware of the various options for charging and connecting their devices.”

iPhone 14 will soon be unveiled along with the new Apple Watches. They’ve also recently announced a new feature: the satellite connection to send an SOS message that can be used when no other connection is detected.
