Apple Accidentally Leaks New Item Tracking App, AirTags
Apple has not directly addressed the leak.
It’s not everyday does a major company like Apple accidentally leaked its own information to the public. Recently, they uploaded a video titled “How to erase your iPhone” to guide people in doing factory reset.
While scrolling through the ‘Find My iPhone’ tab under the ‘Settings’, people could see there’s a new description written on the ‘Enable Offline Finding’ feature, first found by Appleosophy.
The description writes: “Offline finding enables this device and AirTags to be found when not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular.”
The video confirms not only the existence of the app/feature in development but also its capability, which is to operate even when not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data. This means the app will operate on Ultra-Wideband radio that was first seen on iPhone 11.
Rumors have it that this will be available as an AR experience in case you need to find your missing phone. But details are not disclosed. There are also leaks that suggest the AirTags is a disk of sorts that chimes when it’s marked as lost, allowing other people to find the original owner.
The video has been turned into private now. But it doesn’t seem like the AirTags revelation and release will be far now.
Apple’s annual event WWDC will be held online in June this year.
