Always Ditched Female Symbol From Packaging To Include Trans And Non-Binary People
What do you think?
The Sanitary Product Always has disclosed it will no longer include the female symbolism on its packaging in a bid to be more inclusive of its trans and non-binary customers.
Reported by CNN, many users of the product have applauded the company for its support for the LGBTQ+ community while a few have condemned the company for erasing the female gender.
The Venus Symbol, which is a circle sitting on top of a cross has been used to represent the female gender
With the historical symbol featuring on their packaging for years now, Twitter User, Melly Broom Wrote in a deleted tweet that reads: ‘Could someone from Always tell me why it is so imperative to have the female symbol on their sanitary products? There are non-binary and trans folks who still need to use the same products you know!’
Responding to the criticism, Procter and Gamble, Always’ parent company announced the symbol will be discontinued from December
‘For more than 35 years, Always has championed both women and girls and we’ll continue to do so. We are very committed to inclusion and diversity and are on a continual journey to understand the basic needs of all of our esteemed customers.’
Well, for some non-binary and transgender people, menstruation can be a dysphoric experience
Also reacting, a Trans Health Program Manager at Fenway Health, Steph deNormand said: ‘Seeing a female-coded image on sanitary pads can increase dysphoria as well as dissuade individuals from buying those products. But using less coded products can make a big difference.
Speaking to NBC, Steph added: ‘Non-binary and Trans people are regularly misgendered and a gesture like this can, however, broaden the experiences as well as open up spaces for individuals who need the products.
