30 Stunning 2020 Miss Mexico Contestants In Their Traditional Outfits

The competition to win the tiara of Miss Mexico for 2020 is getting intense. There are 32 beautiful models, all vying for one position. Recently, a photoshoot session for each of the models has been released. As they’re competing for the title of ‘Miss Mexico,’ they dressed up in costumes that are heavily inspired by Mexican ladies’ traditional wear.

Grand Finale of Miss Mexico will be held on the last day of October, the day of Halloween.

The spokesperson of Miss Mexico explains that the designers of these Mexican-inspired costumes are foreigners. They are given the opportunity to explore Mexico’s culture and history to incorporate those inspirations into the costumes. They will also be taking home the costumes at the end of the day.

The costumes materials range from cotton, bark, and agave to wool and silk. The use of these materials come from the origin of Mexican culture, which has a mix of  pre-Hispanic civilizations as well as Spanish invasion later on. This is why some costumes has a twist of European style on them.

One of the most iconic piece of traditional clothing from Mexico is the sombrero. This wide-brimmed hat was usually worn by cowboys (vaqueros) and mariachis, but recently has become more widely accepted to be worn by anyone. Its name comes from a Spanish word, ‘sombra’ that means ‘shade’.

But traditional clothings that are reserved for female Mexicans vary very much between regions. They are also called differently depending on where you are. They wear sleeveless tunic with skirt that are designed with religious symbols, marital status and social status on it. They also have Quechquémitl, a kind of poncho women wear to parties and festivals.

So, what’s with the bright colors? It’s fascinating to note that traditional Mexican fabrics were colored with only natural sources. There are many stories, but the Mayans have four sacred colors, including red, yellow, and blue, when we look into their history. People also point out that the sun shines very brightly. It brings out the colors on things!
