Kenneth opened up to daughter, identified as Rebecca Mayes, before sending out emails and write up on Facebook at the beginning of the Pride Month.
‘I am finally free, I am gay and now I am out.’ Kenneth wrote. Kenneth was brought up in a very religious home, but had over time had two identities – Larry, the gay dude he hid for years and Ken, the pretending straight man.
He added: ‘For quite some time, the main truth about the subject matter had been buried in my soul. I reached for being straight because I didn’t think I had a choice. Likewise, I would’ve had to cope with all the disrespect from society – a deviant or pervert. Regardless, people are accepting their true self, hence I had to find the boldness as well.’
In the late 1950s, Kenneth had met with his one true love, Phillip in Long Beach, Calif. The pair had worked for a retail credit organization. But deciding to be a straight man, Kenneth married a woman and had his daughter before getting divorced.
After this, he spent roughly 30years working as a supervisor and counselor at a Division of Rehabilitation in Colorado. Unfortunately, Philip passed away in 2018 and Kenneth has vowed to accept his sexuality in Philip’s honor.
